According to Autos Aol, the Passat is offered in three front-wheel drive trim levels - GL, GLS and GLX - and two all-wheel drive trim levels - GLS and GLX. The GL and GLS are powered by a 170-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder turbocharged gasoline engine; a 134-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine with direct diesel injection (TDI) is also available, generating an impressive 247 pound-feet of torque. The GLX gets a 190-hp 2.8-liter V6. Available transmissions include a five-speed manual and a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic. Standard features on the GL include air conditioning, cruise control and a CD player; GLS trims add a power sunroof, alloy wheels, heated front seats and upgraded audio, while GLX trims are further outfitted with automatic climate control, leather upholstery and genuine wood accents. Safety features found on every Passat include six airbags, traction control, four-wheel-disc brakes with ABS and a security system; electronic stability control with brake assist is optional on the GL and standard on all other trims.
For 2005, the Passat receives upgraded standard equipment, including: new high-quality leatherette upholstery (GL and GLS), heated front seats (GLS), and larger alloy wheels (GLS and GLX). Safety enhancements include electronic stability control with brake assist now standard on GLS trims. Additionally, the W8 trim has been dropped from the all-wheel drive model lineup.
